The Poor Geezers to Release “Best of” Album

April 10, 2013
By

Well, who would have thought it, the DIY stalwarts The Poor Geezers bringing a “best of” album that is being jointly released by Thumper Punk Records and Raven Faith Records.  SELL OUT!-STOP, HALT, WHATEVER- Here’s a chance for more DIY enthusiasts to get their grubby paws on their street soiled tunes and to catch a glimpse of their warty souls. The Poor Geezers trust these labels and nobodies in it for the filthy lucre — there is none to be made in this punk underground rock scene-well known FACT.  Just Do It.

Ok, for those who do not know The Poor Geezers here’s a quick introduction: The core team members are Dean Riches, multi-talented, guitarist, drummer, singer, songwriter, harmonica player who lost his front teeth in a Meteors mosh pit and Eagle Spits, poet, croaker, activist who loves The Clash and Blind Willie Johnson. At times various friends of The Poor Geezers have been known to join them on stage and disc.

Joe Strummer once argued that The Clash always thought they were a punk band and this meant playing what they liked. The Poor Geezers adopted the same attitude “experimental acoustica with its roots set in punk but happy to trudge beyond” (Dave Ht Fungalpunk). The Poor Geezers take from punk, psychobilly, blues, folk, rock n roll, poetry etc. etc. and make their own genre known as Patchwork Punk (a term originally used to describe The Poor Geezers by Dave Ht).  The two geezers share song writing duties and their songs are about what they think, feel, see, dream and envisage. There is faith, hope, joy and laughter to be found in the dark landscapes where the songs are written. Keeping quiet about oppression, injustice and hypocrisy is not an option for The Poor Geezers. The truth may well set you free but nobody said it would be easy. According to Kevin Davies from Combat Ready fanzine there was more truth and common sense to be found in The Poor Geezers first album than in the whole back catalogue of Crass records. Dean and Eagle were at one time drugs counselors and Community Psychiatric Nurses respectively so it is no surprise that a dark sense of humor often creeps into their work. Finally to sum it up we have to go back to Dave HT, montage a controlled mayhem but a picture painted that was very much loaded with messages and beliefs. “This is why I am a punk – for moments such as this – if you don’t get it you never will – it is your loss.”  Check The Poor Geezers out for yourself with this release.

The Poor Geezers “Best of” album is now available through the Thumper Punk Records website, and available for digital download at iTunes and the other usual places.  Thumper Punk Records (www.thumperpunkrecords.com) helps artists record, produce and distribute music that reflects a positive, Christ-centered message.  Raven Faith Records is the music arm of Raven Faith Bible Study (www.RavenFaithBibleStudy.com), which provides online Christian bible study courses, ministry, and teaching.  Release date April 9, 2013.

The Call To Record and Release Live CD + DVD

April 9, 2013
By

Members of the classic band The Call have decided to reunite with the son of late front man Michael Been for two live concerts next week. Been’s son (Robert Levin Been) also has this little band you may have heard of called Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. If you live in or near LA or San Francisco – you better be there. But for the rest of us, the band has decided to record the concert. Of course, being a classic band that has just reformed, there is no label to fund this venture, so they are hoping to turn to fans for help. Check out their fundraiser page to see various supporter packages they have available. Oh, and the fundraiser page mentions a possible remastered box set. So we really need all of this to happen even if it just means that we finally get those classic first three albums on CD finally.

Saviour Machine and Retroactive Records Resurrect Rare Material

June 29, 2012
By

This one has been a bit under the radar, but the long out of print Rarities / Revelations series from Saviour Machine is being reissued by Retroactive Records:

“Originally released in February of 2006, the four volume Rarities/Revelations was a Limited Signature Edition (500 copies) set. Those copies are long gone, and now sell for exorbitant prices when showing up in collectible auctions. Each volume of this set chronicles choice cuts of demo, live, or alternate recordings from one of four eras of band life. The tracks were compiled and edited by Adam Pedersen and the voice of Saviour Machine, Eric Clayton who searched relentlessly through their own personal archives of rare Saviour Machine material. Other tracks were culled from the collections of numerous, avid Saviour Machine fans who also shared the desire to have a comprehensive collection of the best of rare and exclusive Saviour Machine material. The result is four Discs of five hours of music. The 2012 releases on Retroactive Records have each Disc/Volume packaged in its own 6 panel digipak with liner notes, and each Disc/Volume is sold individually. It’s worth noting that the Rarities/Revelations set is dedicated to one of the most loyal fans ever, Peter Kompanje (1978-2005), who amassed one of the most extensive collections of Saviour Machine rarities on earth. Days before his passing, Eric Clayton spent time with Peter, who openly shared his deep affinity and affection for these bootlegs and rarities. One of Peter’s greatest wishes was for all the Saviour Machine faithful to hear this unique material that had given him so much joy, encouragement, and strength! Four individual releases; each with 80 minutes of music; each wearing the passion and inspiration that makes Saviour Machine great. This collection is unique – much like the band – the music is dark, progressive, gothic, rock and metal – but yet still manages to defy description and comparison. The grandfathers of gothic music have done it again! Get all four Volumes of Rarities/Revelations to complete your collection!”

Other than a news report at HM Magazine, I haven’t seen much press about these. You can get each CD at Amazon:
