====== Hoi Polloi ====== Alternative Rock\\ Auckland, New Zealand Alternative gospel band Hoi Polloi was formed in New Zealand by vocalist Jenny Gullen, her husband, bassist Andrew Horst, guitarist David Ball, and drummer Jozsef Fityus. Horst, Ball, and Fityus were formerly in band called [[Jamboree]]. Moving to the U.S., Hoi Polloi performed their first gig at the 1990 Cornerstone Festival and signed to the gospel label [[Reunion Records]] soon after. A restrictive contract, however, forced the band into two albums that overly polished their rugged, rootsy sound, //Hoi Polloi// (1992) and //Spin Me// (1993). Ball and Fityus returned to the homeland in 1994, forcing the recruitment of New Zealand native Scott Pearson on drums and American guitarist Troy Daugherty. In mid-1995, Hoi Polloi released //Happy Ever After//; its single "Tiptoe" spent eight weeks at the top of the Christian rock charts, and the album crossed over to college and commercial-alternative radio. At some point, Pearson was replaced with Matt McGuyer on drums and the band recorded a final demo //Only Flying// in 1996 before calling it a day. ===== Discography ===== | 1990 | [[https://christiantapeunderground.wordpress.com/2020/08/05/hoi-polloi-satisfy/|Satisfy]] | | 1992 | Hoi Polloi | [[Reunion Records]] | | 1993 | Spin Me | [[Reunion Records]] | | 1995 | Happy Ever After | [[Via Records]] | | 1996 | [[https://christiantapeunderground.wordpress.com/2024/03/10/hoi-polloi-only-flying-demo/|Only Flying]] | ------ ==== Satisfy ==== 1990 Independent Jenny Gullen - Lead vocals, acoustic guitar\\ David Ball - Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, keyboards\\ Andrew Horst - Bass, backing vocals, acoustic guitar\\ Jozsef Fityus - Drums Jasmine Kemp - Background vocals on "Satisfy"\\ Dave Henderson - Background vocals on "Satisfy"\\ Youth Renewal Singers - Background vocals on "Rest Tonight"\\ Guy Wishart - Acoustic guitar on "Satisfy"\\ Jeff Tribe - Trumpet\\ Peter Slainey - Saxophone\\ Dave Parry - Keyboards on "Love Shine Down" - Rest Tonite - Rain - Love Shine Down - Satisfy - The Other Name - Come to Me ------ ==== Hoi Polloi ==== 1992 [[Reunion Records]] (REND-24409) Jenny Gullen - Lead vocals, acoustic guitar\\ David Ball - Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, keyboards\\ Andrew Horst - Bass, backing vocals, acoustic guitar\\ Jozsef Fityus - Drums - Rest Tonite (3:18) - Satisfy (4:35) - The Other Name (4:33) - Come to Me (4:41) - Surrender to Love (3:41) - Justify Me (3:36) - Rain (4:06) - Old Familiar (4:13) - Love Without Mercy (4:19) ------ ==== Spin Me ==== 1993 [[Reunion Records]] (701 0082 723) Jenny Gullen - Lead vocals, acoustic guitar\\ David Ball - Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, keyboards\\ Andrew Horst - Bass, backing vocals, acoustic guitar\\ Jozsef Fityus - Drums The St. Margaret's Boys Choir - Backing Vocals on "Show Me"\\ John Catchings - Cello on "Back to Zero" and "Show Me"\\ Shawn McWilliams - Drums\\ John Mark Painter - Keyboards, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, programming, backing vocals\\ Kristen Wilkinson - Viola on "Show Me"\\ David Davidson - Violin on "Show Me"\\ Ben Degatio - Gregorian chant on "Turn Turn Turn" Produced by John Mark Painter - Dance (3:57) - Love Shine Down (4:32) - Back to Zero (3:22) - Angel (3:28) - Show Me (3:25) - Lie in the Temple (4:25) - Love for the Living (4:20) - Turn Turn Turn (3:50) - Spin Me (3:38) - Take Me Home (4:32) ------- ==== Happy Ever After ==== 1995 [[Via Records]] (D6007) Jenny Gullen - Lead vocals, acoustic guitar\\ Troy Daugherty - Lead guitar\\ Andrew Horst - Bass, backing vocals\\ Scott Pearson - Drums\\ - Tiptoe (2:33) - Thaw (3:23) - Smile (5:22) - So Far Away (3:11) - Pity Baby (4:26) - Lucy (4:03) - Big Fat Happy Day (2:55) - Sun, Moon And Stars (5:02) - Falling Down (5:23) - Boat (3:34) - Love Has Come (4:11) ------ ==== Only Flying ==== 1996 Independent Jenny Gullen - Lead vocals\\ Troy Daugherty - Guitar\\ Andrew Horst - Bass\\ Matt McGuyer - Drums - Simply Super - Only Flying - If I Was Juliet ------ ===== Links ===== * [[https://www.crossrhythms.co.uk/articles/music/Hoi_Polloi_Music_for_the_masses_played_by_New_Zealand_pop_rockers/36878/p1/|Hoi Polloi: Music for the Masses Played by New Zealand Pop Rockers]] * [[https://www.crossrhythms.co.uk/products/Hoi_Polloi/Spin_Me/2649/|Review of "Spin Me"]]
