Acoustic Rock
California, USA | Flagstaff, Arizona, USA | Mesa, Arizona, USA
CAVU revolves around the nucleus of founders Peggie and Ken Balcom, a married couple who first met in California during the 1980s. Their acquaintance resulted in an almost instant musical connection and they started to collaborate on the crafting of new songs before a week had passed. Their band went through several different lineups before eventually settling on a stable crew. Peggie Balcom, a former teacher, plays percussion, harmonica, and keyboards. Ken Balcom plays guitar, and they both contribute vocals. CAVU is rounded out by bass player Gerry Cassidy and drummer Mark Ciminello. The band's name is an acronym for a weather term: “ceiling and visibility unlimited.”
The group put out the cassette Infinite Swirling Acoustic Joy as an independent release in 1993. One of the cassette's tracks (“Thousand Tongues”) was featured on the Metro One Records internationally distributed compilation Hi. CAVU then began to hear positive feedback from people all over America, as well as Europe.
The Balcoms relocated to Flagstaff, Arizona the following year, where they started recording for Hayden's Ferry Records. The label issued CAVU's debut CD, A Little Conversation in 1994. This album received unsolicited air play on several stations in the U.S. and in Canada. Hayden's Ferry also re-mastered and re-issued Infinite Swirling Acoustic Joy in CD format in 1997.
In 1999, the Balcoms moved to Mesa, Arizona. Their third project, The Weatherman in the Missle Age, was released in 2001. Rise Up was started in December 2009, and completed in February 2010. And the latest CD, Holy Child, was released in December 2011 in time for Christmas.
CAVU is currently performing around Arizona, and is in the recording studio working on several new CD projects.
