Indie Pop
Riverdale, California, USA

MAP is an indie pop band from Riverside, California that consists of Josh Dooley (guitar, voice, harmonica) and various people that can work with him when he is recording new material. Some of these people have included Joey Esquibel, Angelo Esquibel, Frank Lenz, Richard Swift, Loop, Heather Bray, Ben Heywood, Paul Akers, and Trevor Monks.

In 1992, Dooley was invited to a concert and made a joke about how he wished he could open. His friend Mike Perez made this joke a reality. Perez suggested that Dooley get Jason Martin of Starflyer 59 and two other friends to play. They quickly put together a band in 5 days and called it Nova Satori. Nova Satori's first concert was in Redlands. The band played about five shows and recorded some songs with Bob Moon. But soon the band kind of fizzled. From about 1992 until 1999 Dooley would play solo sets at various coffeehouses.

Dooley met Noah Lamberth who wanted to form a country band (like Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, not country pop) mixed with Pink Floyd. This band was called Hank Floyd. Joey and Angelo Esquibel were already members of Hank Floyd when Dooley joined.

Hank Floyd's second show was at the Sundance Film festival opening for Dwight Yoakam. Yoakam had written and directed a film (East of Heaven, West of Hell, 2000) and they opened for the screening. They even ended up at a star-filled after party.

Hank Floyd soon recorded a demo at Jason Martin's house in 2000. Dooley also expressed interest in recording his own songs with the Esquibel brothers. Joey mentioned to Jeff Cloud that they were recording with Dooley, and Cloud wanted to hear a demo. Cloud liked the demo so much that he wanted to release it as it was. However, the band couldn't fix any issues with the recording because only one track would record, so they didn't want to release it the way it was.

This led to Cloud offering to release a MAP album if Dooley would record with the Esquibel brothers and Martin producing. These recordings became the first MAP EP on Velvet Blue Music: Teaching Turtles to Fly. Soon after, MAP released another ep Eastern Skies, Western Eyes in 2001. MAP released their first full-length record, Secrets by the Highway, in 2003. Frank Lenz and Richard Swift played most of the instruments for this release.

In the summer of 2004, Map released their second full-length record, Think Like an Owner. For this album, MAP was Trevor Monks (drums), Loop (bass), Heather Bray (guitar, voice), Ben Heywood (drums).

MAP released their third EP, San Francisco in the 90s, with more additions to their band line-up, consisting of Paul Akers (keyboards) and Trevor Monks (drums). This album gives tribute to late-80s Brit pop and mid-60s American jangle rock.

In 2011, Dooley released a collection of songs recorded with Katie Dooley on vocals under the moniker Loneliness is Dangerous. Sometimes the album is referred to as a release by MAP & Katie Dooley.“ The 2009 compilation collection called Pistols and Pearls was also released as a Loneliness is Dangerous album before being switched back to a MAP release.
