Brian Healy and DEAD ARTIST SYNDROME

b
I sat down tonight to work on the next issue of the zine, but something else is bothering me more so I figured I would blog about it, share it to facebook and hopefully people will pass it around. A little backstory… I met Brian Healy through a phone call when I interviewed him some years ago for Down the Line. I liked the guy, loved his music and feel that he made music that no one else was making in the industry. He was pushing buttons, calling a spade a spade, he was funny, serious, well informed, unique and always self deprecating…and he still is! Brian stayed in touch with me and our friendship grew. I finally met him when my wife and I flew out to CA for the Aunt Bettys reunion show, Brian was there and it was great hanging with him.

Healy has been a good friend…he calls me and puts up with my slow response to return calls, he checks in on me and my wife because he knows what we’ve been going through, he prays for us and I have grown to sincerely love the guy. He’s one of those rare people who actually care about others and about the greater good. When it comes to his music he always gives credit to the band that plays with him, never taking the spotlight for himself, I’ve heard him say over and over when complimented on his music, “I only stand on the shoulder of giants, they’re the ones that make this music happen.”

Brian has had numerous health issues through the years, numerous…and they’ve been serious. When I first interviewed him I was blown away by what he deals with. As usual he deals with it in his self deprecating manner, but in the serious times you know his main concern is for his family, and he expresses that. As you may or may not know, Brian is in the hospital right now recovering from a stroke. It’s just the latest in a crazy amount of things he and his wife and son have had to deal with.

band 1

Let me get to the point…everyone in this industry knows Brian. All the artists we cover know him and heck, most all of them have worked with him. As far as the music goes, I have seen Brian post, post and post some more when it comes to his friends and their Kickstarter campaigns. I have seen him rally his facebook fans to promote concerts for his friends, encouraged people to support his friends in their fundraising endeavors, encouraged people to support his friends when they’re raising money for medical bills, etc. etc. etc. I’ve encouraged Healy numerous times in the past to solicit help from fans and he has always said no…I asked him if Down the Line could do it for him and he said no. He doesn’t like to ask for anything from people. Hell, he doesn’t know I’m writing this and he probably would tell me to shut up if he did know.

I guess it boils down to this…out of sheer necessity for not wanting to let down his friends for work on Kissing Strangers (probably their best album to date!), Brian has asked fans to contribute a small donation to achieve a very meager goal of $2500. Let’s get real, $2500 for funding an album from DAS that includes Healy, Riki Michele, Steve Hindalong, Michael Knott, John Piccari, Gym Nicholson, Ojo Taylor, Ric Alba, Marc Plainguet and Derri Daugherty is a small amount. I know times are tough, life is tough and more folks are struggling than ever before. I want to encourage people to dig deep and help this project. I want to ask Healy’s friends in the music community to post this project to their social media sites and ask their fans and supporters for help. There are people blowing past goals of 10k and 20k Kickstarter campaigns, why can we not reach the $2500 he needs…and it’s not for him personally, it’s so he pays the folks who have worked so hard on this record.

paint

Let’s make it happen for our friend while he recovers in the hospital. I know money is tough, and those who can spend money have 10 other Kickstarters going on at the same time. If you can’t support financially, then help spread the word through social media…post it to facebook, tag your friends. It’s an achievable goal that can be reached!

I’m starting to sell off CD’s and records on facebook and will contribute the money from those sales to this. I just posted some 77’s records. My facebook link is: https://www.facebook.com/steve.ruff.71 Add me as a friend, check back daily for more posts and no reasonable offer will be refused…every post says OBO (or best offer). If you want to contribute to the album directly, the link is here: https://www.facebook.com/FrntlnRcrds/events That is the direct link to read about the album and donate. Please share this and help the cause!

Thanks for taking the time to listen, and as Brian would say…”Grace and Peace to you”DAS

Labels…The “new emerging progressive church.”

One of the things that we want to do here at Down the Line is also become a place for people to express ideas and beliefs as they relate to the scope of everything we hope in as believers in Christ. It is also a place for people who might want to follow Christ, or those who did at one point, etc. We come in all shapes and sizes, colors and shades and none of us know anything that is 100% certain. Scripture even tells us that we “see through a glass dimly.” We all get on facebook and try to express our point of view only to be shot down or taken to task by some other know it all out there in digi land who is typing away at the same time they Google what they believe in. Seriously… it doesn’t even make sense anymore.

Why has Christianity, and Jesus, been distilled down to political slogans? C.S. Lewis said, “The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ… God became Man for no other purpose.” So when a national tragedy, or really an international tragedy, like the Newtown shooting happens, how is it that it becomes a political topic for gun control or no gun control? Does it even matter that 20 children lost their innocent lives? I’m not saying that people can’t comment on what they believe, but what we are left with is a pissing contest between gun owners and gun controllers. Does Jesus’ heart break for 20 children who are dead, or does he bleed because of a possible assault weapon purchasing ban? Then to add insult to injury, these self appointed loudmouths like Dobson decide that Newtown happens because we took prayer out of school, or because gay citizens are allowed to marry…we should be ashamed to let what happened be politicized by a party, and we should all run James Dobson and his ilk out of town for even opening their mouths and pretending to speak for the rest of us. How do blaming gay people draw anyone unto the Father? It doesn’t and it never will. Mike Huckabee ought to be chased out of his TV studios and run out of town for blaming gay people…and while we’re at it, we should also let Franklin Graham know that changing his list of ‘cults’ to exclude Mormonism isn’t okay just because he wanted to elect Mitt Romney. I’m not saying Mormonism is a cult at all, I’m saying speaking out of both sides of your mouth is what everyone else on planet earth calls ‘lying’. Why are Christians lying for political gain? It sure is a quick about face to get votes, they sure don’t bend on any social issues to get votes, nope, and those issues are set in stone. How does Graham so easily dismiss his religious convictions? Let’s not even get started on how he is destroying a great and honest legacy left by his father, or how his elderly father who is not in control of his facilities suddenly supports Romney. When Billy Graham was a younger man, I remember what he said about the danger of mixing politics and religion, and he said he would never again do that after the disaster that happened with Nixon.

I guess my point is really that what we do in the public square is what we represent Christ and his message to be. I’m pretty sure from what Scripture tells us that politics were not even a consideration to Jesus…values and ethics and morality were, but just because those things are claimed in politics doesn’t really mean anything. When politicians draw lines in the sand that can’t be crossed, or circles that people have to stand in, of course we feel our rights are violated and we shouldn’t have to abide by these laws…whatever, do what your heart leads you to do, but don’t claim it to be Christ’s morality meter. Christ doesn’t care about your ‘rights’, the only ‘right’ He ever gave anyone was the ‘right’ to choose.

Are issues important? Of course they are, don’t misinterpret what I am saying. I’m just saying that Christ didn’t bestow upon you the ‘right’ to own a gun, the ‘right’ to marry or prevent someone else from marrying, or the ‘right’ to choose for someone else. I will never trust a bunch of rich old white guys in Congress, who do little more than legislate morality and laws for the benefit of themselves, their friends and their wallets. It reminds me of the phrase, “Something’s wrong here, something’s radically wrong here.”

The ‘Church’ in America has become a lost voice because those that make up the church have isolated themselves into a corner that accepts only what they believe to be true, and only what they understand and are comfortable with. Just because you don’t believe in abortion, homosexuality, gun control, removing the Ten Commandments from the public square, taking prayer out of school, etc., it doesn’t mean that you are right or that you understand the political and/or religious implications of it all. When you shake your fist and block someone from having access to safe and legal abortion services, you have trampled on their right to choose, their legal right to healthcare and you have screamed the name of Jesus at them and quite possibly turned them away from ever wanting to understand Him. Call it murder if you want, that is your conviction, and should they have to believe what you believe? If the roles were reversed, would you want to have to adhere to someone else’s religious and/or political convictions? Of course not, so why do you want the rest of the world to live by yours? Because God’s laws are holy, right and pure? Great, which laws are holy, right and pure and by whose definition will we decide that? We should all focus on ourselves, get our personal houses in order, and once we do that, then keep your personal house clean. God is bigger than us and our weak and finite understanding; He can save the world without our help. God can change the heart of man, not a bunch of screaming whining Christians thinking they are God’s morality stick to beat over the values of every other person on planet earth.

The last thing that really is difficult for me to understand is that Christians not only demand the obedience of non-believers, they demand the obedience of Christian brothers and sisters as well. They demand that we live by their values as they understand them, and the hideous thing is that those who are in a different place get labeled as heretics, we get called the “new emerging progressive church” as though they are referencing some evil cancerous entity. I have no problem aligning myself with believers who believe that Love is still the greatest commandment. The “new emerging progressive church” looks at grace before law, they look at love instead of fear, but they are labeled as heretics. I have always found labels to be silly and much too broad and ambiguous, but if its labels people want then let them have them. I am quite happy to align myself with the emergent progressive church, and if that means you label me a heretic, then so be it…I feel pretty good about it.

Steve’s Favorite Albums of 2012 in No Particular Order, and Surely Grossly Incomplete…

I decided to give a best of 2012 list a shot…I don’t usually do these because I can’t rate most higher than others and I listen to so much music from days gone by that I find many times what I’m really into at the time came out 20 years ago. Here are some of my many, many favorites that actually came out in 2012. I know I have left out many important bands and releases; this was just my “off the top of my head” list.

  • The Bloody Strummers – Return of the Halcyon Days
  • Royal Thunder – CVI
  • Killing Joke – MMXII
  • Bill Mallonee – Amber Waves
  • Bob Dylan – Tempest
  • NOFX – Self Entitled
  • Dinosaur Jr. – I Bet on Sky
  • Swans – The Seer
  • Leonard Cohen – Old Ideas
  • Joy Electric – Dwarf Mountain Alphabet
  • The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends
  • Kissing Cousins – Unfortunate End
  • The Violet Burning – Pentimento Volumes 1 & 2
  • The Choir – The Loudest Sound Ever Heard
  • Hammock – Departure Songs
  • The 77’s – Echos O’ Faith & Played Naked
  • Seventh Circle – The Line (single)
  • The Sword – Apocryphon
  • Graveyard – Lights Out
  • Mammoth Thunderpower – I am Thunder EP

I don’t know when this was released, but I got the 25th anniversary re-mastered edition of Adam Again’s 10 songs. This also reminds me to tell you to head over to www.frontlinerecords.us and get any Frontline Records release you can want for $5.99. This means that all you guys who have shared CD’s that were long out of print, now you can support the bands!

I am also semi patiently waiting to hear the new albums coming from Bad Religion, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and The Lifesavers. Maybe we will get some new Hidden from Blackout and Western Grace, maybe some new DAS and Ric Alba solo…maybe a new Bloody Strummers??? The new Dropkick Murphy’s is pretty awesome, but it did come out this year and not 2012.

Bill Mallonee Amber Waves review…album # 50!

Bill Mallonee

Amber Waves

Independent 2012

Bill Mallonee has returned with a new full on studio release for this year! I think this is actually maybe his 3rd release over all this year, but this is the full studio/backing band and fan funded project. Bill continues to improve and surprise with every release from my point of view. Not one to sit around too long, he is constantly touring, writing and bringing his tunes to the people and putting the miles on the road.

What was really fun about this release is that I basically ignored almost every social media clip and unfinished track update, and I waited for the full on released product so that I could enjoy it like the days years back where the physical disc is inserted, the lyric insert is poured over while the tunes come banging through my headphones. Fans of Mallonee will dig in and enjoy this release as expected, but so should the fans that clamor and cry about missing that VoL sound. Not only is this all VoL members including Jake Bradley and Kevin Heuer, but tracks like To the Nines sound like around the bend relatives to the Slow Dark Train era. The guitar licks and ambience that spills out with One Kiss at a Time and Faith (Comes Soaked in Gasoline) feels like Summershine era brilliance. The Moog synth Bill uses on One Kiss at a Time was so awesome and amazing that it gave me a profound love for that track in particular. Mallonee has never been one confined to genre specific traps, and the use of the Moog is new ground that has been traveled and done exceptionally well!

The beautiful thing about Bill’s music is his unrivaled ability to capture the stark and empty feelings of isolation, the ache and echo of hopelessness, and the sting of desolation. Yet through the trial he paints triumph, through the grief he finds the flickers of hope, and through the tragedy he finds and reminds us of the reality behind the world that confronts us.

This release is number 50 for Bill, and he has endured with a weathered honesty and a poetic outlook on the American life, the introspection of the soul and the inspiration of relationship and love. This is a “must have” for all Mallonee fans present and past.

The Artwork of Michael “Gerard” Knott

I wanted to talk a minute about Michael Knott’s artwork, and also a new thing he is doing as he branches out artistically. Most of you guys probably know that Michael has painted for as long as he has been making music. Did you know that his paintings are not only super cool, but they are very affordable as well? Purchasing an original Gerard piece is a great way to own some nice art, and a great way to support Michael’s work.

Michael is branching out now with his paintings and he is collaborating with Brian Healy on new pieces! That’s right, Knott and Healy in the saddle together and working together artistically…just think of all the cool stuff that could come from this pair together! I have included a picture of one of Michael’s latest pieces, as well as one of the Knott/Healy pieces, both are pieces that I am super stoked to have in my collection. To get details on the art and how to purchase paintings, email gerardartwork@yahoo.com. You can check out Brian and Michael’s Facebook page to see the latest pieces.

I also asked for Brian’s permission to update our readers on his health. Many of you know that Brian has undergone some serious surgery as he has been dealing with what was diagnosed as Adult Onset Hydrocephalus. You can read more about it here www.aans.org He has undergone brain surgery after dealing with some serious and scary symptoms too numerous to list here. The good news is that he is on the mend and sounds better than ever! Brian has gone from being in a wheelchair, to now walking without a cane. He thanks everyone for their prayers and their well wishes, and while he is not back up to being on Facebook and causing other trouble, we will be hearing from him again very soon…keep your ears to the ground!

The 77’s Sticks & Stones re-issue

The 77’s

Sticks and Stones re-issue (Ultra Deluxe package)

Lo-Fidelity Records

It is hard to find anything to say about Sticks and Stones that hasn’t already been said a time or two in the last 22 years. On a personal note, this was my introduction to the 77’s as a band. It wasn’t until years later that I checked out their albums prior to this one, but Sticks has remained a favorite of mine for years, not just because of the absolutely beautiful songs that are contained here, but also because of the memories that are associated with it. Sticks was a truly alternative album when it came out, it was the alternative to pretty much anything else in the Christian market at that time. Tracks like “MT” come rolling out with this sonic wave of guitar that stands up and demands attention, then the tempo changes into a refined and laid back groove that sounds absolutely beautiful because Roe’s vocals are so fluid and intensely emotional that they add a dimension to the music that makes this real art. If tracks like “MT”, “The Days to Come” and “This is the Way Love is” get stuck in your head, then tracks like “Nowhere Else”, “Don’t, This Way”, “God Sends Quails” and “Bottom Line” will break your heart. The music here is so intense and really provides a perfect vehicle to Roe’s lyrics and singing, and as “The Loop” testifies, you don’t always need to have singing to hit the mark. All these tracks and more comprise the first disc of the re-issue.

Disc number two is called “This is the Way Love Was” and is a compilation of demos and live tracks. The really cool thing about these tracks are that unreleased rarities like “Problem Girl”, “Cross the City Sky” and “Walk Through the Door” are written by Mark Tootle, and they are a great chance to hear Mark singing lead vocals and show just how formative his style and sound were in the early days of the Sevens. There are a couple of pretty amazing versions of “This is the Way Love Is” on disc two as well, but all in all you get another 11 tracks of really solid music on the second disc.

If you bought the “Ultra Deluxe” package, you also get the third disc titled “Seeds and Stems” (insert your own reference here) There are another cool 10 tracks on this disc which is one of my favorites because I can never get enough of favorites like “Ba Ba Ba Ba” or “I Could Laugh (But it’s Not Funny). This disc is also built up with original mixes, demos and live tracks that make you sing along, reminisce, and I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that the guitar on this version of “God Sends Quails” is unbelievable brilliant. There is also a bandcamp exclusive live version of “You Don’t Scare Me” at the end of the digital portion of this package. “You Don’t Scare Me” is a bluesy, rocking track that lives up to everything you know and more in this live setting that has Roe at the top of his game.

Just to make this release even better, the guys have released this in as many formats as you could possibly want. There are the hardcopy pressings, the digital releases, the individual digital tracks and then there are several packages that come with different merch options like t-shirts and other assorted goodies. I’m really excited about this re-release; it is from a classic album that sounds so much better with the digital restoration and remastering. This is a must have for any fan, casual or die-hard alike, there is something here for everyone. Hearing these tracks has reminded me once again of just how stunningly good this band was, and still is. My hats off to the guys who preserved this stuff, and to the ones who restored it to sound so good all these years later, and thanks to Li-Fidelity Records for releasing this in so many different packages.

Bill Mallonee’s Hard-Scrabble Dreams review

Bill Mallonee

WPA Volume 13

Hard-Scrabble Dreams

Independent 2012

I never expect to go long between Bill Mallonee’s releases, and I am grateful for that. Bill’s writing has long been a source of comfort and inspiration to me. His music is always relevant and fresh, lyrically he is the best in the game and he is one of the most prolific storytellers around. I hold the hope that one day he will write a novel, I think it could be a notable work considering the years, the history, and the traveling experience that he has in this art form of Americana. Back to the music…

This collection of songs was inspired by three things according to Mallonee. I took the liberty to quote him directly from his website about Hard-Scrabble Dreams. The three sources of inspiration according to Bill, “One was John Steinbeck’s eloquent work, “The Grapes of Wrath,” the second inspiration was a gift from Muriah, a photographic essay, called, “Bound For Glory” (America In Color 1938-1943) It is an arresting testimonial. The images of “just plain Americans,” I believe, are some of the most heroic and inspiring you’ll ever see. The last inspiration was a gift as well. It was a gift from the American people. It came from the folks I’ve played for over these past 22 years. This land & its great people have always been the frame of reference of my work, from the day I first crawled into a rattle-trap van to do my first US tour in 1991. They, and their stories and lives, have been inspiring me ever since.”

I am a huge fan of Bill’s work; I own it all in abundance. I honestly believe that this WPA is a testament to the words referenced above. Bill’s inspiration for this album comes through in every way through these songs. I think lyrically it is stripped down and honest, and musically I think it is quite possibly the best he has ever done. These tracks shine with renewed vigor, and a rustic intensity of grace. The first song here “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah (I Got Faith like a Butterfly’s Wing) is possibly one of the most beautiful songs that I can recall from Malone’s recent work. Thematically many of these tracks center around the topic of faith, and in true fashion they are riddled with an honest intensity and a trusted fragility that pushes the listener into deeper truths that really ache and ebb inside every one of us.

One of the things that struck me when reading Bill’s notes about the album was when he related, “But the poor also live inside of us. We are them. They are a reminder that a man is not the measure of his possessions.” That struck me because Malone has scratched out a somewhat sparse living for years now, but what he has done has take the talent and the gifts that God granted him, and he has dug deep and found the majestic in the mundane of daily hardship and toil. He has taken the stories and the questions from over twenty years of documenting life on the road, and he has fashioned them into ragged stories about struggle and grace, beauty and desolation; about the hope that we still cling to and the perseverance that pushes us on. This is the stuff of life.

Hard-Scrabble Dreams is a total of ten tracks. We get treated “Bakersfield” from The Power and the Glory sessions (and WPA Vol. 9 Drifter Songs), and it actually fits perfectly into the spirit of the other songs here. There are three alternate tracks and seven brand spanking new songs on here. One of the most effective songs on here for me is “Faith (It All Comes Soaked in Gasoline). This is one that I think can rival favorites like “Blister Soul” or “Welcome to Struggleville” because of the accurate acknowledgement of the bitterness of life, of choices we are confronted and conflicted with, and with the paradox of something bigger than ourselves that begs for our reliance and trust. Bill brings these truths home in a way that we can understand. Again, I think lyrically this is the heart and soul of an American poet at his best. Mallonee creates because he is compelled to, and I think if none of us were listening he would still be doing it…fortunately for us we are listening, and I believe that this WPA offering is the best of the bunch.

“I dunno what you heard before to got here
dunno what you thought you’d see
one thing about faith, you can be sure of
It all comes…soaked in gasoline
It all comes…soaked in gasoline”

Head over to the bandcamp store and drop a few coins on this release. I know that you will be pleased with this, it is a solid and seasoned release from an artist that truly embodies the very story that he captures so well through his music.

Advertising in Down the Line

I wanted to drop a note to our readers (if anyone ever reads this column) and let everyone know about advertising here at Down the Line. We do not sell advertising, I think part of the integrity of Down the Line is that we do not need to sell ad space to do anything, and therefore we never have to answer to anyone because of a money issue. However, we are going to start running some advertisements in these pages simply because we want to support these causes/organizations and we think that our readership might also be interested. Just to clarify though…we are not selling ad space and we will not turn this into an advert rag that you can’t ever find articles in. Matt and I have talked about this a few times before, and I think it is cool to be able to do stuff for free. If you want to support the work we do there will be inexpensive ways in the very near future. (We just had our first run of t-shirts done)

What I would always appreciate most is for you guys to support the bands we cover. One of the drawbacks (in my opinion) to the digital age of music is that people go on bandcamp or all these other music sites, and they stream and listen to music for free, but they never support the artist with a purchase or donation. That is unfortunately just the way things are these days, and that doesn’t even take into account all the file sharing that goes on. I’m not playing the moral police about what is or isn’t right, I am saying that these artists should be compensated for their work. If you’re going to listen then you should pay…fair is fair. Just the way the game is played at this point seems like the cards are stacked even higher against artists. The corporate greed is still prevalent and now more concentrated between fewer labels, and the means to make ends meet are tighter and tighter. In addition, there are so many avenues of output that the pool of good music is murky at best. There seems to be huge push of quantity over quality, which is another reason to support good music when you hear it.

So anyway, I’m sure everyone reading has heard it all before, but it is important. Look for exciting new stuff coming soon from Down the Line. We started a small label called Down the Line The Collective and we just released an eco-friendly packaging hard copy of Western Grace’s Take Back the Scene album. It is inexpensive, $5 download and Josh is selling the hardcopy’s himself, you can contact him through his Facebook page.
