Dave White, Phil Williscroft, and Brent Gemmill were previously in a band called The Clear. They decided to change names to Lung. Dave White was also in Thin Red Line before The Clear. The band toured New Zealand, Australia, the United States, and Europe extensively, opening for bands like Pavement, Babes in Toyland, and Nirvana. Their debut album Cactii was distributed through Ajax Records in the United States, Hyacinth in France, Embryo Arts in Belguim, and Plankton Records in the UK. European MTV showed their “Full Moon Again” video.
In 1993, the band released their second full-length Three Heads on a Plate. Their relentless touring and underground success of their songs led to a five album record deal with Los Angeles label Restless Records. The first release was a new version of Three Heads on a Plate with three songs dropped (“Mary's Mother,” “Venus,” and “Exit”) and two songs from Cactii added (“Full Moon” and “Sleep”). Unhappy with diminishing label support, the band intentionally got themselves dropped from Restless Records.
Lung disbanded around 1994 or 1995. White recorded a solo album Bad Acid Soundtracks in 1999 which was later re-released digitally under the Lung banner. Lung then reformed in 2019 with Dave White, original bassist Phil Williscroft, and Dave White's son Zak White on drums.
White has also been in other bands such as Tractor, Claire's Un-Natural Twin, K-Tel Dancers, and Surplus Sons of a Factory Nation.

In 2024 it was re-released digitally on BandCamp.
