The Holy Ghost Boys

Rap
Oakland, California, USA

Stanley Kirk Burrell (later known as M.C. Hammer) formed a Christian rap group with singer and musician Jon Gibson known as the Holy Ghost Boy(s). Hammer and Tramaine Hawkins were performing with Gibson's band at the time in concerts at various venues (such as the Beverly Theatre in Beverly Hills).

Some early songs produced were “Word,” “B-Boy Chill,” “Son of the King,” “Wall,” and “Stupid Def Yal.” It is unclear if these were released as physical singes at the time, or just written and performed. Hammer also recorded “Son of the King” for his debut album Feel My Power (1986), as well as the re-released version Let's Get It Started (1988). “The Wall” was originally the song where Burrell originally identified himself as MC Hammer first. It was later recorded for Gibson's album Change of Heart in 1988.

A bootleg CD of early Holy Ghost Boys songs was released in Europe in 1994 as Hammer - The Early Years with a copyright year of 1987.
