Zur Gabriel

Heavy Metal
Los Angeles, California, USA

“Zur” in the Bible means “Rock” and “Gabriel” means “man of God.” James Salters and Tony Quinn played in the band Born Again in Hayward California from 1980 until 1984. Then they formed Zur Gabriel as a 4 piece in early 1984 with Bill Hawkin on guitar and Neil Egan on drums. Then the whole band move to Southern California to be in the L.A scene.

In early 1985 Bill Hawkins left the band. In mid-1985 Zur Gabriel as a 3-piece did the first demo in a rehearsal warehouse on a 4 track reel to reel recorder. Soon after that, guitarist Gerard Medicis joined the band for a few months. Then in mid 1986 Gerard and Neil Egan left the band.

Tony and James tried to soldier on, and in the fall of 1986 recorded a new demo on a 4 track cassette with drummer Andy Bacon. This demo was basically just to float around to find another guitarist. It was record in a weekend in Tony's garage.

Only a few weeks later James Salters was offered a vocalist position in the The Brave and a subsequent recording deal, so Zur Gabriel was over.

Later James and Tony also played in a touring blue grass band from 2011 until 2013.
