-It was 1998. I was in Nashville making my first "solo" record. But I had some of Nashville's finest musicians at my disposal. So I played them Bob Dylan's Time Out Of Mind and Radiohead's OK Computer before we started to record. I knew they were in a different league than me... so I was going for similar textures, vibe and feel. Like if those two records collided and got mashed together. Listen to the end of Deep Reasons Why and you hear Radiohead vibe... Listen to Jesus Is Alive and you will hear the groove and texture of that Dylan record... Then add me and my vibe and perspective to the mix and out comes Down Goes The Day. Don't mistake this for a "Jesus Frees Us" record. This has got more questions than answers, more doubt than praises... but when I DO praise - I really mean it.
-Song notes:
-#1: God Only Knows is this Bob Dylan influenced rock and roll folk song with roaring guitars from Jerry McPhereson. "I never knew you could give your soul a shower..." I needed a soul shower at this time of my life. I love this photo - taken by Allen Clark - who is one of the best clickers around!
-#2: This song grooves with a drum loop but ends with a rousing rock band turning their amps to 11. It's like looking back at my life thinking "I'm just another witness to the Creator's beauty in this world." For as much darkness and chaos and crap life has to offer us... there is so much beauty out there - if we are looking for it.
-#3: This was never meant to be a "Christian" song... it was written in a place of doubt and uncertainty. I was crying out for Jesus to reveal himself. I was saying Father Wisdom, you are welcome in here, teach me how to love this world and THEN we will know that you are alive." If we love this world in your name - THEN we will know. We gotta love the outcasts, the one's who are on the streets. Don't leave it up to angry street corner preachers and tv evangelists. I'm NO different than the fringe people - I AM THEM.
-#4: You know who is playing that violin? The amazing David Davidson. I met him, shook his hand and in a couple of takes he made beautiful sounds and haunting melody on my song. Then he disappeared into the wind...
-#5: It's my frustrating conversation with God. What do you want from me? That was the big question... maybe it still is. All this glory and majesty around me - endless skies, highest mountains... what could you want from a grain of sand being tossed about in the wind?
-#6: I know what you are thinking... "learn to pray?" but this is another song born of frustration rather than joy. This is a look behind the curtain of my life at this time. I was banging on God's door... begging him to let me in. I felt like an outsider to his love. I felt like I was tripping through the darkness of life... learning to walk, learning to crawl, learning to fly... and learning to pray through the chaos of the day.
-#7: As far as relationships go... this song is a heartbreaker.
-#8: I guess it seemed like style matters more than soul around this time in my life... maybe to the music business... it still does.
-#9: My friend Eddie Morales and I co wrote this song. I was going for The Stones or World Party with the "whoo -hoo" vibe during the chorus. Nothing beats a "whoo-hoo" vocal hook. And you can hear the obvious Radiohead OK Computer outro mixed with my own catchy guitar hook. Melting worlds... melting styles... I love that. I believe some things will forever be too deep for me to ever understand. I'm just fine with this - now... Just make a rockin' guitar pop song out of it - and then melt the ending in oblivion!
-#10: I will never forget in 1998 before I knew anything about creating drum loops... I just beat boxed this drum loop idea for drummer Steve Brewster and 10 minutes later - he had this wicked, murky drum loop going on. Then then I had Matt Slocum from Sixpence play the cello on it... and then I got wild and had a kid's choir come in and sing on it... then I asked Riki Michele from Adam Again to sing on it because she is AMAZING... and we all collided into Down Goes The Day... THIS IS MY MASTERPIECE.

-Recorded in Nashville, TN with the Ragamuffin Band. It was one of the best times ever with such a creative team around me. Rick Elias and Mark Robertson produced this record. And I was ready to throw down & not make any excuses for my vocals or my lyrics. I know - the album title is a mouthful - but man... it packs a punch!
