“Sarala Devi, a niece of Rabindranath Tagore, had spent some time in Mysore, returning to Calcutta with a collection of tunes, one of which was a bhajan from that area. Tagore took this melody and re-fitted it with new lyrics, creating “Anondoloke Mongolaloke” in time for the Maaghotsava celebration of 1893. A fascinating account of Tagore and his household can be found in Women of the Tagore Household by Chitra Deb, translated by Smita Chowdhry and Sona Roy.”
