Boanerges

Progressive Hard Rock
Wilmington, North Carolina, USA

“Boanerges (Mark 3:17 - James son of Zebedee and his brother John {to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”}), was one of the early Christian Rock bands of the 1980's. The music was very progressive and the message strong. The lyrics left no doubt about the band's faith. Boanerges was started by Jimmy Bennett, Wayne Phelps, Donnie White, Tony Mallard, and J.D. Collins as a way to share their Christian faith with the many young people in the area. Most rejected or had never heard about the truth in the teachings of Jesus Christ or the miracles he accomplished during his life. From the beginning, the band's powerful lyrics and high energy music reached out to many, young and old alike, on the streets, local beaches and even into secular nightclubs in the Wilmington area.

Eventually evolving into a regionally known Christian act, the band traveled to many areas of the southeastern United States to perform before moving to Atlanta, Georgia to join forces with Broken Heart's Dean Harrington and take the name Sacred Fire. Sacred Fire also toured as Leslie (Sam) Phillips' band and opened for many nationally known recording artists, and were featured during Petra's Beat The System Tour in 1985. Special thanks go to Steve Horrell for the help in making Boanerges' final recordings possible before the band's move to Atlanta.

In July, 2002 the band celebrated its twentieth reunion by gathering once again with their families at Chris Stanley's Church, Highest Praise, in Shallotte, North Carolina. Along with the great fellowship, everyone enjoyed the luncheon and afternoon jam sessions. Thanks to Chris and Sacred Fire's former sound man Stan Letarte for all the hard work getting the equipment set up. Hopefully in the future the band members can work on recording some new material for a possible CD release.”
