Ronnie (Dance House Children, Joy Electric) and Jason (Dance House Children, Starflyer 59) Martin formed a techno band called Link of the Haunted in 1988. Pet Shop Boys was a major influence on their sound. They soon changed their band name to Two Lads. Their first live performance was at a Mexican buffet for their high school's senior banquet. They also opened for other more well known bands in Orange County. Two Lads recorded a demo that contained the first version of “We'll Last So Long.” They decided to form a new wave rock band and became The Chant.
